After suffering a stroke in Ohio, I went through several hospitals and rehab centers before coming back home to Iowa. My son and I decided on Northgate Care Center because it’s where I used to live—and I’m so glad we did. From the moment I arrived, the staff and therapy team made me feel supported and cared for. My primary goals were to regain my ability to walk, strengthen my upper body, and improve my speech. The therapists here have worked with me patiently and consistently, and I can truly see the progress I’ve made.

Everyone at Northgate has been fantastic—Brett, Andrea, Millie, and both Tims on night shift have all been incredible. The housekeeping team keeps everything spotless, and the whole staff makes it feel like a community. I’ve made friends here and look forward to meals, bingo, church services, and even the talks about nature. I’m working hard to return to assisted living, but a big part of me will miss this place. To anyone who needs rehab, I’d tell them to give it their all—it’s worth it. With the support and encouragement you’ll find here, you’ll see just how much progress you can make.

I’ve been able to take care of myself again—dressing, washing up, and getting around on my own, which is all I could ask for at 86. I’ve also kept myself busy organizing old phone numbers and enjoying the musical programs they offer throughout the week. Some performers I want more than others, but it’s nice to have those options when I’m in the mood to join in.

My dad, Cyril, became a resident at Southcrest Manor after a series of health challenges that started over five years ago. It all began when my mom had a serious hip issue that required specialized care, and shortly after, my dad contracted COVID. With everything going on, it became clear that they needed support, and our family chose Suncrest Manor because it provided a comfortable, caring environment where they could be together.

Although my dad didn’t require much physical help—especially impressive at 95, the staff assists him with simple tasks, such as getting his shoes and socks on and helping with showers. He stays active, using the step exercise machine daily and participating in all the activities. He looks forward to bingo on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, loves the wildlife presentations, and enjoys breakfast in the main room every morning.

What really makes Southcrest stand out is the people. As my dad puts it, ‘The girls spoil me.’ They truly care about him, and he cares about them in return. That kind of genuine connection makes all the difference. The facility is always clean, friendly, and down-to-earth—it’s the kind of place we feel confident recommending to others. In fact, we’re even considering it for my dad’s brother. Southcrest has been a blessing for our family, and I’m grateful for the care and kindness they continue to show my father.
